Percy was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the son of Samuel Richard a flagman for a traction engine and Elizabeth Ryland née Clark of 10 Bagnall Cottages, Bagnall Road, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Samuel Richard was born in 1868 in Plymouth, his mother Elizabeth Clark was also born in 1868 in Newark, Nottinghamshire. They were married in 1892 in Newark and went on to have 11 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911. Their surviving children were Charles b1893 Nottm, Bernard b1896 Nottm, Harold b1897 Nottm, Percy b1899 Nottm, Walter b1902 Nottm, Herbert b1904 Basford, Annie b1906 Basford, Elizabeth b1907 Basford, and Ancel b1910 Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Bagnall Cottages, Bagnall Road, Old Basford, Nottingham and are shown as Samuel Richard 43 yrs a flagman for a traction engine, he is living with his wife and children, Charles 17 yrs a flagman for a traction engine, Bernard 14 yrs a farmers boy, Harold 13 yrs a farmers boy, Percy a scholar, Walter a scholar, Herbert a scholar, Annie 5 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth 4 yrs and an unnamed daughter 1 yr.
Private Percy Ryland enlisted on 23rd December 1916 at Nottingham ,he was 17 yrs and 320 days old, he gave his address as Bagnall Cottages, Bagnall Road, Old Basford, Nottingham , his next of kin was his father Samuel Richard Ryland of the same address, he was placed into the reserves the following day. He was mobilised for war on 12th March 1917 and placed into the territorial reserve battalion. He embarked from Folkstone on 7th March 1918 arriving the same day in Boulogne. He was posted to Etaples Camp on 8th March 1918 and eventually posted to the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry on 11th March 1918. He was killed in action on 27th May 1918 and is buried in Hermonville Military Cemetery grave reference II D 6
Two of his brothers also served and died during the 'Great War' Pte. Harold Ryland, 1/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), was killed in action on 24th June 1916. He is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery. Pte. Charles Ryland, 1/7th (Robin Hood Rifles) Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 1st July 1916. He is buried in Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers.
