Isaac Reed was born in 1899 in Blackwell and was the son of William a coal miner and Mary Anne Reed née Chilton of 51 Mill Street, Old Basford. His father William was born in 1866 in Basford and his mother Mary Anne Chilton was born in 1870 in Wolverhampton, they were married in 1889 in Blackwell and went on to have 12 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy, their surviving children were Millicent Ruth b1891 Blackwell, William b1892 Blackwell, Sarah Ann b1894 Tibshelf, Stephen b1896 Tibshelf, Thomas b1898 Newton, Derbys, Isaac b1899 Tibshelf, Martha Jane b1901 Basford, Walter b1904 Basford, Florence Olive b1906 Basford, Mary Elizabeth b1908 Basford and Francis b1910 Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 51 Mill Street, Old Basford, Nottingham and are shown as William 45 yrs a caol miner, he is living with his wife Mary Anne 41 yrs and their 11 children.
Private Isaac Reed enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 10th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he died of his wounds on 1st April 1918 he was buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, grave reference V F 11A The official sources all agree that he died on 1st April 1918.
In memoriam published 2nd April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “REED. – In loving memory of our dear son Isaac, who died of wounds April 2nd, 1918, aged 19. Christ will link the broken chain. – Loving mother and dad, brothers and sisters. “REED. – In loving memory of my dear brother Isaac, who died of wounds received in action April 2nd, 1918. A noble sacrifice. – Loving brother Tom. “REED. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. I. Reed, 10th Lancashire Fusiliers, died of wounds in France April 2nd, 1918. Memory clings. – From loving brother and sister, Will and Minnie. “REED. – In loving memory of our dear brother Isaac, Lancashire Fusiliers, who died of wounds April 2nd, aged 19.
