Wallace Norman was born in 1897 at Basford and was the son of George Norman a hosiery presser and the late Mary Norman, of 1, Fairfax Terrace, Fairfax St., Old Basford, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1853 at Basford and his mother Mary was born in C1871, they were married and had the following children, Celia b1888, George b1897, Wallace b1897, Mary Ann 1899 all were born at Basford. His mother died prior to the 1911 census. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Fairfax Terrace, Fairfax Street, Old Basford and are shown as George 58 yrs a widow and hosiery presser, he is living with his children Celia 23 yrs a hosiery turner, Georg 19 yrs a trimmers assistant, Wallace 14 yrs a brusher and Mary Ann 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Wallace Norman was called up for service on 1st July 1916, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 359 days, his address as 1 Fairfax Terrace, Fairfax Street, Nottingham, his occupation was that of a hosiery hand, his next of kin was his father George of the same address. He was posted to the reserves the following day. He was mobilised on 3rd October 1916 and posted to the Highland Light Infantry on 10th October 1916. He landed in France on 20th February 1918 and was transferred to the 15th battalion Royal Scots on 24th February 1918 joining the battalion in the field on 5th March 1918. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918 and is buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, France grave reference VIII.C.9
