Family History

Mark Morley was born on 19th August 1896 at Basford, he was baptised on 1st June 1896 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, he was the son of James a colliery banksman and Eliza Morley née Caloe of 50 Whitechapel Street, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father James was born in 1865 at Nottingham, his mother Eliza Caloe was born in 1867 at Sheffield, they were married on 29th March 1887 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, they had 5 children sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their other children were Dorothy Ruby born 1899 and Alice born 1890. In the 1911 census the family were living at 172 High Street, Old Basford, James 46 yrs is a colliery banksman, he is living with his wife Eliza 44 yrs and their children, Mark 14 yrs a photographer and printer and Ruby 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Mark Morley enlisted on 31st August 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs and 62 days, he was a photographer. Posted to the 8thbnattalion Leicestershire regiment he landed in France on 29th July 1914, he was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial , France.
