George Harold was born in 1897 in Basford and was the son of Joseph a hosiery scourer and Elizabeth Morley née Vaughan of 13 Scotland Place Old Basford Nottingham. His father Joseph was born in 1861 in Basford and his mother Elizabeth Vaughan was born in 1864 in Sheffield , they were married in 1883 in Nottingham and went on to have 10 children al of whom were born in Basford, they were John William b1885, James H b1887, Ernest b1890, Joseph b1893,Lily b1895, Cyril b1900, Elsie b1901, Edward b1902 and Clarence Morley b1903. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Scotland Place, Basford, Nottingham and are shown as Joseph 50 yrs a hosiery scourer in a bleach yard, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 47 yrs and their children Ernest 21 yrs a labourer in a bleach yard, Joseph 18 yrs a carriage cleaner, Lilley 16 yrs a lace mender, George 14 yrs a hosiery hand, Cyril 11 yrs a scholar, Elsie 10 yrs a scholar, Edward 9 yrs a scholar, and Clarence 8 yrs a scholar.
Private George Harold Morley originally enlisted on 4th November 1914 at Newark into the territorial army , he was 18 years and 5 months of age , he was a hosiery trimmer and was living at Scotland Road, Basford, his next of kin was his father Joseph of 13 Scotland Road, Old Basford, he served with the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters until 21st March 1916 when he was discharged under the Military Service Act 1916. He was then called up for war and enlisted at Derby on 5th May 1916 he was now 19 yrs and 47 days old, he was still living at 13 Scotland Road, Basford and still a hosiery trimmer. He served with service number 45285 in the 14th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in France on 13th October 1916 , serving until he was admitted to hospital suffering from myalgia on 1st December 1916, he was treated at the 47th Field Hospital before returning to England on 10th December 1916 for further treatment. On 16th May 1917 he once again embarked from Folkstone landing at Bolougne and on 2nd June 1917 he was posted to the 1st battalion Border Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd December 1917 at Cambrai. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral.
