Family History

Percy Bemrose was born in 1894 in Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire he was the son of Samuel a general labourer and Mary Ann Bemrose née Spencer of Lamcote, Radcliffe on Trent. His father Samuel was born in 1864 in Radcliffe and his mother Mary Ann Spencer was born in 1867 in Radcliffe, they were married in 1887 in Radcliffe. They went on to have 7 children , sadly 1 died in infancy all their surviving children were born in Radcliffe, they were William b1880, Bertie b1890, Percy b1893, Mildred b1895, Eugine b1897 and Elsie b1899. In the 1911 census Percy has left home he 18 yrs and a private soldier with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters, living at Crowhill Barracks, Devon In the same census his family are living at Lamcote, Radcliffe on Trent and are shown as Samuel 46 yrs head of the family a general labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 44 yrs and his children Eugine 14 yrs , Elsie 12 yrs, his eldest son William 22 yrs a farm labourer who is married and has a wife Harriett 21 yrs and their son Leonard Bemrose 1 yr.

Military History

Private Percy Bemrose, was a career soldier in the regular army and served with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He saw home service from 5th December 1910 until 17th October 1912, he then served in India from 18th October 1912- 2nd September 1914. He returned home from 13th September 1914 until he went to the Western Front on 3rd November 1914 joining the British Expeditionary Force , he was killed in action on 12 March 1915 at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (March 10-13, 1915). He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on Le Touret memorial

Extra Information

His older brother, Bertie Bemrose, also served during the 'Great War' he was also a career soldier in the same battalion as his brother 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire) Regiment. He enlisted in Nottingham on 22nd December 1909 and landed in France with his battalion, on 4th November 1914. He was killed in action on 29th May 1918, has no known grave, his name is commemorated on Soissons Memorial Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 10th March 1916:- “BEMROSE. – In loving memory of Percy, the dearly-loved son of S. and M. A. Bemrose, killed in action, March 10th, 1915, of Radcliffe-on-Trent. He died that we might live. – Father, mother, sisters, brother (in France). “BEMROSE. – In loving memory of Private Percy Bemrose, killed in action, March 10th, 1915. A sad day to recall. – Bill and Harriett. “BEMROSE. – In loving memory of Private Percy Bemrose, 1st Sherwood Foresters, killed in action, March 10th, 1915.
