Henry was born in 1881 in Nottingham and was the son of Henry and Eliza Gill, his mother died in Nottingham in 1907 she was 60 yrs of age. He married his wife Rose Hazard in Nottingham in 1904 , they went on to have the following children , William b1905, Alfred, b1906 Henry b1907 and Ernest b1910 Albert b1912 and George b1915 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at of 2, Towlsons Place, David Lane, Old Basford, Nottingham and are shown as Henry Gill 63 yrs a widower and unemployed he is living with his son Henry 29 yrs a brick layers labourer and his wife Rose 27 yrs and their 4 children , Wiliam 6 yrs , Alfred 5 yrs, Henry 4 yrs and Ernest 11 months.
Private Henry Gill, enlisted in Nottingham and served with 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Chatsworth Rifles), he had previously served with 10th and 17th Battalions. He landed in France on 12th August 1915 and was killed in action on 29th April 1918. He is buried in Voormezeele Enclosures No. 1 and No. 2.
In memoriam notices published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 22nd April 1919:- “GILL. – Reported missing April 25th, 1918, now reported killed on April 29th, 1918, Pte. H. Gill, Sherwood Foresters. We miss him most who loved him best. – Wife and six children and sister Beatrice. “GILL. – Reported missing April 25th, 1918, now reported killed on April 29th, 1918, Pte. Note that The Commonwealth War Graves Commission record his death as taking place on 29th March 1918. However, 'Soldiers Died,' and the register of the disposal of his personal effects and medal rolls agree that he was killed on 29th April 1918.
