He was the son of George Henry and Mary Chambers and the brother of William, Arthur, Robert and Annie Chambers. In 1901 they lived at Knipton, near Grantham. He was the husband of Ellen (née Leaper) Chambers (married 31/5/1916) of Main Street Gedling. She later moved to 20 Overdale Road Stockhill Estate Basford Nottingham.
Chambers attested at Grantham 2/9/1914 standing 5' 7" and weighing 128 lbs. Whilst in the trenches he suffered from frostbite, dysentery and enteric fever.
Letters and post cards were Thomas Chambers's effects returned to his widow who was awarded a weekly pension of 13/9d from 6/5/1918. No link can be traced between Chambers and Basford. His wife lived in Gedling throughout the war and must have moved to Overdale Road after 1918 because the estate was an example of the 'Homes Fit For Heroes' building programme. It seems likely that Ellen had Thomas's name placed on her local memorial although he had no connection with the area.
