Family History

Alfred Burton was born in 1886 at Basford, Nottingham, he was the son of William Arber Burton a dairyman and his first wife the late Ellen Sophia Burrows. His father William Arber Burton was born in 1852 at Moulton, Lincolnshire, his mother Ellen Sophia Burrows was born in 1860 at Cheltenham, she died in 1899 aged 39 yrs, they were married on 2nd October 1877 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, they went on to have 7 children sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were Robert b1879, John b1880, Alfred b1886, Martha b1889 and Ernest b1896. Following the death of his mother his father remarried in 1900 at Nottingham to a widow Elizabeth Ann Clements formerly Shipperley, she brought two children to their marriage. In the 1911 census the family are living at 200 High Street, Basford, William Arber Burton 59 yrs is a dairyman, he is living with his 2nd wife Elizabeth Ann 55 yrs, and her two children , Thomas Clements 19 yrs and Fred Clements 14 yrs. In the 1911 census Alfred has left the family home, he is living at 1 Mary Terrace, Crocus Street, Meadows, Nottingham, he is shown as being 24 yrs and a plate layer for the Midland Railway, he is living with his brother in law Alfred Spybey 28 yrs a drayman

Military History

Private Alfred Burton enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 2nd battalion, Sherwood Foresters he went to France on 8th September 1914, He was killed in action on 20th October 1914, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Ennetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack,.having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
