George Edward Breffitt was the former landlord of the Bleachers' Arms, 23 Lincoln Street, Basford,he was born in 1888 in Basford and was the son of William Edward Breffitt a butcher and Alice Catherine Breffitt née Wainwright of 2 Mount Pleasant, Basford, Nottingham. He married Mabel Hilda Leaper in 1912 in Nottingham, they went on to have a daughter Winifred born in 1915. His father William Edward Breffitt was born in 1866 in Basford and his mother Alice Catherine Wainwight was born in 1866 at Westwood, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1887 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have another son John Breffitt born 1889 Basford. In the 1911 census he was living with his family at 2 Mount Pleasant, Basford (or 107 Northgate, Nottingham) and are shown as William Edward Breffitt 45 yrs a butcher, he is living with his wife Alice Catherine 45 yrs and their son George Edward Breffitt 23 yrs a butcher also living with them is their niece George Wainwright 11 yrs a scholar and a servant Mary Karen 14 yrs. His probate was proven on 22nd September 1917 at London and shows him as George Edward Breffitt of the Bleachers Arms, Old Basford, died on 13th December 1916 at Connaught Hospital, Aldershot, his effects of £795.10 shillings was left to his widow Mabel Hilda Breffitt.
Private George Edward Breffitt, served with Field Butchery “K” Supply Company, Army Service Corps, was called up on 22nd November 1916 and died at Connaught Hospital, Aldershot, only a little more than three weeks later of bronchitis on 13th December 1916. Aldershot. He is buried in Nottingham (New Basford) Cemetery.
His brother John Breffitt also served during the Great War , he enlisted on 20th August 1915, he was 26 yrs and 5 months of age, he was a butcher and was living at 105a Northgate, Nottingham, he was posted to the 9th Field Butchery, Army Service Corps and landed at Le Harve, France on 2nd May 1916. He served until he was demobilised on 19th March 1919. Death notices published on 15th December 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BREFFITT. - On December 13th, at the Military Hospital, Aldershot, Private George Breffitt, aged 29, beloved husband of Mabel Breffitt, Bleachers' Arms, Basford. Silently mourned. Funeral Basford Cemetery, Monday, [18th December 1916] 3 o'clock. Broken-hearted wife and little baby. [Winifred Elsie] “BREFFITT. - On the 12th inst. [sic], at Aldershot, George Breffitt. From his sorrowing mother [Alice] and father [William Edward], North-gate, New Basford.” In memoriam notices published 13th December 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- BREFFITT. - In loving memory of Pte. George Edward Breffitt, died December 13th, 1916. He will never be forgotten, never will his memory fade. - From his sorrowing father and mother. “BREFFITT. - In loving memory of my dear husband, Private George Breffitt, who died at Military Hospital, Aldershot, December 13th, 1916.
