John William Binks was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the son of john Binks a perambulator painter and Sarah Ann Binks née Cross of 1 Pearson Street, Basford, Nottingham. His father was born in 1860 Basford and his mother Sarah Ann Cross was born in 1857 also in Basford, they were married in 1894 in Basford and had a son John William who was born in 1894 in Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Pearsons Street, Basford and are shown as John 51 yrs a perambulator painter, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 54 yrs and their son John William 17 yrs a bamboo furniture maker.
Pte. John William Binks, enlisted in Nottingham and served initially with service number 41940 in the Sherwood Foresters later transferring to 9th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, He was killed in action on 10th August 1917 and is buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery.
In memoriam published 10th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BINKS. – In loving memory of our dear son, Private J. W. Binks, who was killed in action August 10th, 1917, Royal Innis. Fusiliers.
