William Edwin was born in 1890 in Hathern, Leicestershire and was the son of Alfred Thomas a wood sawyer and the late Sarah Annie Basford née Caldwell, of 20, Queen St., Old Basford, Nottingham. His father was born in 1866 in Nottingham and his mother Sarah Annie Caldwell was born in 1869 in Hathern, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough Registration district. they went on to have the following children , William Edwin b1890 Hathern,Edith b1892 Durham, Harold b1894 Hathern, Eva b1896 Durham, Grace b1898 Durham, Eric b1908 Basford, Nottingham. His mother Sarah Annie died aged 41 yrs in 1909 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Queen Street, Basford and are shown as Alfred 45 yrs a widow and wood sawyer, he is living with his children William Edwin 20 yrs a wood sawyer, Edith 19 yrs no occupation, Lucy 15 yrs a box labeller, Grace a scholar and Eric 3 yrs.
Private William Edwin Basford enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He died of wounds on 16th January 1918 and is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme
In memoriam published 15th January 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BASFORD. – In loving memory of Signaller William Edwin Basford, K.O.Y.L.I., died of wounds in France January 15th, 1918.
