George Bayes married Mary Jane Bates at Worksop in 1876. George was a joiner and in 1881 were living, with a son, James Watmore Bates, at 18 Sandhill, Worksop but sadly James died when two years old. Three years later in 1884, the couple had another son who they named Percy Frederick George Bayes. More grief was to come to the family in 1886, with Percy being only two years old, his father George died aged 43. In 1891, Percy and his widowed mother were living as boarders in the Hancock household with his family of six, at 147 Gateford Road. Percy’s mother died in Worksop aged 57 in 1907 and by 1911 Percy was living as a boarder at 75 Bridge Street making his living as a wheelwright. Sometime over the next few years, he made his way South and was living at Churchdown, Gloucester, the place where he enlisted.
Percy Bayes was born in Worksop in 1884 and in 1901 was an apprentice to a wheelwright living with his widowed mother at 142 Gateford Road. By 1911 he had qualified as a wheelwright engineer living at 75 Bridge Street as one of many boarders of Mr And Mrs William Farrell. Percy had moved to Gloucestershire where he originally served in the Wiltshire Regiment, but was serving in the Somerset Light Infantry when he died of natural causes, possibly due to the ’flu epidemic on 6 June 1918.
