It was in Sheffield in 1895 that David Presswood and Alice Wastridge married. By 1896 they had a son who they named Harold and was born in Brampton in Yorkshire. They moved to Worksop about 1898, give or take a couple of years. By 1901 they were living at The Willow, just off Newcastle Street in Worksop, David was working as a grocer’s porter. They continued living in Worksop where they had five more children, Elsie, 1900, Sydney 1902, Frank 1904, Harry 1906 and Edwin 1908. By the time 1911 came around, David and his eldest son, Harold, were both working in a limestone quarry and living at number 5 Gladstone Street.
Pte. Harold Presswood Worksop Guardian 12 April 1918 A very gallant young soldier to lay down his life is Pte. Harold Presswood, of the Welsh Guards, son of Mr. and Mrs. Presswood, 34, John Street Worksop. The deceased, who was 22 years of age, was a fine stalwart figure, and was well known and greatly liked in the town. He was a steady young man and a good son, and therefore it is not surprising that he made a typical soldier. Previously to enlisting he worked at Steetley Quarry. He was drafted to France on January 3rd this year, and he took part in the fierce and heavy fighting round Arras. He was killed on March 18th by the bursting of an enemy shell, and was buried in a British cemetery. His Commanding Officer, writing to Presswoods parents, speaks very highly of him, and they have the sincere sympathy of their neighbours and friends.
