Family History

Frederick Royden was the son of Frederick Joseph and Dorothy Ann Waring (née Barton).His father Frederick Joseph was born in Tutbury, Staffordshire, in 1866 and his mother Dorothy Ann Barton was born in Burton upon Trent on 26 October 1864. They were married at Derby St Luke in 1895 and had two children both of whom were born in Burton upon Trent: Frederick Royden b. 25 October 1895 (O/N/D Burton upon Trent) bap. Burton upon Trent St. Margaret 12 December 1895 and Dorothy Mary.Frederick Joseph was an elementary school teacher for the Burton School Board and Education Committee and later in his career was headmaster of Grange Street schools. In 1901 he and Dorothy (35) were living with their son Frederick (5) at 137 Calais Road, Horninglow, Burton upon Trent. Frederick's sister, Dorothy, was born later that year.By 1911 the family was living at 20 Morley's Hill, Horninglow, Burton upon Trent, and this was to be the family home until the death of Dorothy Anne in 1943.Frederick's father, Frederick Joseph, died on 12 September 1935.In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled Dorothy Ann Waring (described as 'physically incapacitated') was living with her married daughter, Dorothy Mary Wright, her husband (an elementary school head and ARP Warden) and their child, at Morley's Hill. Dorothy Ann died on 5 July 1943.

Military History

10th Bn attached 7th Bn. Formerly G/5224 Private Royal Fusiliers. Commissioned second lieutenant Royal Sussex Regiment.Second Lieutenant Frederick Waring was killed in the attack on Ovillers on 7 July 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Inscription on family headstone, Horninglow St John churchyard, Staffordshire: ‘Also of their son 2nd Lieut Frederick Royden Waring killed in action (Ovilliers) July 6 (sic) 1916 aged 20 years’Staffordshire Advertiser, 14 September 1935: ‘Burton on Trent. Death of Councillor FJ Waring. Elected a member of Burton on Trent Town Council in February in succession to Councillor JW Campion, Mr FJ Waring died at his home, Morley’s Hill, Horninglow, on Thursday, aged 69. Mr Waring, as an Independent, defeated Mr JW Mann, Co-operative party, but was only able to take a short active interest in the affairs of the town before illness overtook him. Mr Waring was for 43 years a school teacher under the Burton School Board and Education Committee, being headmaster of Grange Street Schools for thirteen years up to his retirement in 1930. He formerly played for the local football club having as a team mate Steve Bloomer, the famous ex-Derby County and ex-international player.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk)
