Family History

George Henry Dukes and Sarah Kitchen married in Worksop in 1882. George earned his living as a boot and shoe maker. They had three children who were born in Worksop at 12 Frederick Street, the family’s long term residence. Their three children were Mary Annie born 1883, George born 1888 and Cecil born 1892. By 1911, George was self employed making shoes and boots, Mary Annie was dress making, George junior was a coal miner and Cecil a furnace stoker at a steel works.

Military History

Cecil Dukes enlisted very early in the war in the Scots Guards at Glasgow. He was drafted to France on the 14 Jan 1915 and after only 10 days he was killed in action and commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. He was awarded the British and Victory Medal plus the 1915 Star.
