George was born at Misson in July 1877,the son of George a general labourer and Martha Oldfield (nee Snowden). he had two siblings Arthur born 1879 and Minnie born 1884.In the 1911 census he is living with his family at Oldfield's Yard,West Stockwith he is 33 years of age single and a general labourer.
George was called up for service and enlisted on 27th April 1916 at Derby and initially served with the Lincolnshire regiment. On 8th November 1916 he was transferred to the 350th Headquarters company of the Labour Corps and saw all his service on the home front. From 18th May 1917 until 24th May 1917 he was admitted to Grimsby Military hospital reason for which is given as mental problems. On 24th may 1917 he was given a medical at the Wharncliffe war hospital in Sheffield and found to be unfit for further military service. On 19th June 1917 at a medical board he was found to be unfit for further service and on the 10th July 1917 was discharged from service at Nottingham. It would appear the cause of George problems was the fact that some years before joining the services he had contracted syphilis and as a result he eventualy became mentally unstable and suffered from paralysis. Following his discharged he was awarded a pension of £65.He is buried in the Misterton Cemetery.
