Although John Payne was born in Pittsburgh, USA, he declared himself a British subject, born 1875 on the 1911 Census. He lived at 32 Hill Street Leicester and was married to Emma (probably Emma Baugh married at Bethnal Green in 1907). No record has been found of his connection with Welbeck. His soldier’s effects gratuity was left to his widow Emma.
John enlisted in the 6th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment at Leicester. He reached the rank of Lance Corporal. War diaries report the 6th Battalion was in action from 14/7/1917 to 17/7/1916 starting their activities from Mametz Wood. 7 officers were killed or 20 wounded and 500 other ranks killed, wounded or missing.
John Payne is buried in the Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, France.
