William Herbert Keel was born in 1889 at Packwood, Knowle, Warks. He was usually referred to as Herbert and was the first born child of William and Theresa Elizabeth Keel, née Marsh. He had four sisters and one brother who were all born at Poplar Road, Packwood, Warwickshire. Herbert’s father was a domestic gardener and in 1911, Herbert followed his father’s trade and was working away from home as a domestic gardener along with six others all resident at The Bothies Warter Priory York. Some time later he used these horticultural skills to secure employment at Welbeck estate, Nottinghamshire.
He enlisted at Worksop shortly after the outbreak of war and served in the Balkans in 1915. Having survived this campaign, he was sent to the Western front where he was killed in action. He is buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-la Boisselle
