Family History

Matthew Baggley was born in 1894, he was baptised on 2nd April 1894 at St Mary's Church, Radcliffe on Trent, he was the son of Thomas Baggley a platelayer and his first wife the late Annie Baggley née Gresswell of Albert Street, Radcliffe on Trent. Thomas was born in 1864 at North Muskham, Annie Gresswell was born in 1866 at Balderton, she died in 1894 aged 28 yrs, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recoded in the Basford registration district, they had two further children, Florence b1890 and Alfred b1892. Thomas re married in 1894 recorded in the Bingham registration district to Rhoda Russell born 1870 Willoughby, Warwickshire, they had a further son Bernard born 1896. In 1911 the family are living at Cropwell Road, Radcliffe on Trent, Thomas 47 yrs is a plate layer for the Great Northern Railway, he is living with his second wife Rhoda 41 yrs and their children, Alfred 19 yrs a lace worker, Matthew 17 yrs a bookbinders apprentice and Bernard 15 yrs an office boy.

Military History

Private Matthew Baggley enlisted 11th December 1915 aged 21 years 10 months. He served with M Coy and joined 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 27th January 1916. He died of pneumonia 20th February 1916 at West Harton, South Shields (source Nottingham Evening Post) whilst still in training. He is buried in Radcliffe Cemetery

His brothers Alfred and Bernard both served in the war and survived Following obituaries were published on 20th February 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post and read:- “BAGGLEY. – In loving memory of Pte. Matthew Baggley, Sherwood Foresters, late of Swiss Cottage, Radcliffe-on-Trent, died of pneumonia at West Harton Military Hospital, South Shields. February 20th, 1916. A day of remembrance sad to recall. – Father, mother, and two brothers. “BAGGLEY. – In loving memory of Pte. M. Baggley, passed away at South Shields, February 20th, 1916. A day of remembrance sad to recall. – His fiancée, Nance. “BAGGLEY. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Private Matthew Bagley, died February 20th, 1916.
