Extra Information

Worksop Guardian 11 August 1916: “News has been received at Turner Wood, Shireoaks, of the death of Pte George Fenton, of 10th Sherwood Foresters, who died a noble death in trying to save a wounded comrade. His Platoon Sergeant, writing to Mr John Hartley, of Turnerwood, cousin to Pte Fenton, and with whom the latter lodged previous to enlistment, says one of his pals was wounded and in great danger, of being captured by the Germans, when George went up to rescue him, but he was hit in the head by a bullet and died shortly afterwards. Pte Fenton was only 21 years of age, his birthday accruing just before he was killed. He was a plate layer on the G.C.Railway, and very well known in the neighbourhood of Shireoaks. He enlisted shortly after the outbreak of war, and had been in France about 14 months, and was on a short leave home about five weeks before he was killed. He was a native of Cottam, where his parents now reside”. Research by Colin Dannatt
