Family History

Henry Ivor Smith was born in 1895 at Farnsfield and was the only son of Robert a farm labourer and Ruth Smith née Lee of Coombs Cottage, Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire. His father Robert was born in 1856 at Farnsfieldand his mother Ruth Lee was born in 1864 in Kirkby, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District, they had 3 children, sadly one was to die in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Ida b1891 at Farnsfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at Coombs Cottage, Farnsfield and are shown as Robert 55 yrs a farm labourer , he is living with his wife Ruth 47 yrs and their children, Ida 20 yrs a school teacher and Henry 16 yrs a farm servant, also living at the address is Fred Tomlinson 18 yrs a farm cowman he is listed as a servant.

Military History

Driver Henry Ivor Smith enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Farnsfield , he served with 'D' Battery 110th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France on 26th September 1915, he died of wounds on 3rd August 1917 and is buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery Grave Reference: IV C 3
