Born in 1896, Walter Tinker was the fourth of five sons of Joseph and Millie Tinker.
Walter enlisted around 1915 in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Although details are unknown, on the 3rd October 1917, an accident occurred on an ambulance train. The War Office notified Mr and Mrs Tinker that their son, Walter, had been involved in the accident which had resulted in his death. He was buried in the Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen age 21. His elder brother, Arthur, was also a casualty of the war and died of his wounds and condition three years after Walter. Worksop Guardian 14 December 1917 Mr. Joseph Tinker, of Tamworth, has been notified by the War Office, that his son, Pte. Walter Tinker, K.O.Y.L.I., was accidentally killed in a train accident in France on October 3rd. Pte. Tinker was on an ambulance train when the accident occurred. This promising young soldier enlisted about two years ago, and had seen a good bit of trench warfare.
