Alfred William known as William in the family was born in 1897 at Farnsfield and was the son of John William a farm labourer and Mary Ann Ellen Ross née Bartlett of Farnsfield. His father known as William was born in 1871 at Farnsfield, his mother Mary Ann Ellen Bartlett was born in 1877 also at Farnsfield. They were married in 1897; their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district. They went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood; their children were: Alfred William b1898, George b1899, Wallace b1902, Nellie b1907 and John b1910. In the 1911 census the family was living at Farnsfield and were shown as William 40 yrs a farm labourer, who was living with his wife Nellie 34 years and their children William 13 yrs a scholar, George 12 yrs a scholar, Wallace 9 yrs a scholar, Nellie 4 yrs and John 1 year of age. His pension record card shows his dependant as Mary Ann Ellen Ross of 6 Henson's Row, High Street, Old Basford.

Military History

Gunner Alfred Wiliam Ross served with the 2nd battery Royal Field Artillery. He died on 2nd September 1920 in Mesopotamia and is buried at Baghdad North Gate War Cemetery, Iraq. grave reference VIII.H.11
