Charles Alfred Lockwood was born in 1893 The Lockwood family, headed by William Lockwood, and married to Mary Ann Lockwood (nee Frances) had moved from the London area to Lincolnshire before settling in Ranskill, working as a railway porter, around 1898. They had a family of seven, four boys and three girls. One of the brothers, Private Fred Lockwood, had joined up practically at the beginning of the war was still at the front, and so far as the report in August 1916, had come through without a scratch. Another brother, John, was killed in action in France. The youngest member of the family, Charles, who had lived almost all his life in Ranskill, was working as a butchers apprentice. He had been born in Hertford, Hertfordshire in 1897.
Private Charles Lockwood had joined the army on 6 Sept 1914 and on the 12 April 1916 was wounded at the Battle of the Somme, spent time in hospital and died as a result of his wounds , he was discharged from the Army on 30th June 1916 seven years later on the 28 April 1923 age 26 at Princess Alice’s Home, Slough on the 28 April 1923 age 26 and certified by Matron E Powers. there is no burial spot marked with a Commonwealth War Grave in Ranskill cemetery. Presumably his parents and siblings would have organised his burial as his parents and a sister were still resident in Ranskill. The sister, Elsie Mary May Lockwood was in residence in Ranskill until her death in 1980.
