Thomas Hett and Eliza Morton married on the 27th December 1870 at St Mary’s church, Cuckney. Over the next twenty years they produced nine children, Harriet , George, Clara, Frank, Arthur, Jane, Lucy, Walter and Rose all born in Norton Cuckney. Their father, Thomas had been born in Cuckney, grew up in Cuckney and died in Cuckney in 1893 at the age of 59. After his death, his widowed wife Eliza, “took in washing” and was still recorded as a laundress in 1911 being assisted by her daughters. There was four of her children still at home at this time, Walter a butcher, Lucy, laundry assistant, Rose, and Arthur, a general labourer for a private estate. It was Arthur, who later died for his country.
Arthur joined the county regiment, enlisting at Derby. He served in France, where he was killed in action and as his body was never identified he was commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He had left some provision for his mother as she was the benefactor of his will receiving £536 4s 5d and his war gratuity.
