William Henry Hakes and John Joseph Hakes were the two youngest sons of John Joseph and his wife, Mary (née Taylor). The boys were born in 1895 and 1898 in Cuckney, Nottinghamshire. They had five elder siblings, Mary S born 1883, Sarah 1885, Frank 1887, Alfred 1891, Eva born 1894 and a younger sister Ruth Emma born 1902. All were born and bought up in Cuckney. John Joseph senior supported his family by making his living as a butcher and when William was 15, he was assisting his father in the butcher’s shop.
John Joseph Hakes, like his elder brother, enlisted in Worksop, although in different regiments. He was killed in action in the Somme region and became one of the many missing men and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. His brother, William Henry was also killed six months later in Belgium. Both of them are named in remembrance, on the headstone of their parent’s grave in the St Mary’s churchyard in Cuckney.
