Norman was the son of Joseph a joiner journeyman and Isabella Goulding née McDonald. His father was born in 1854 at Branstone, Lincolnshire and his mother 1855 in Scotland. They married at Lincoln in 1877 and had ten children two of whom died in infancy. Norman’s surviving siblings were Jane b.1879 Ropsley Lincolnshire, George b.1881 Grantham, Joseph b. 1884 Grantham, John George b.1889 Lowdham, Ernest Edward b.1891 Lowdham, and Mabel b.1894 Farnsfield. In 1901 they lived on Sidings Lane Farnsfield. By 1911 Norman was living at 48 Slater Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. His family continued to live at Farnsfield.
Norman enlisted in December 1915 into 2/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. The unit was involved in suppressing the Irish Rebellion in 1916. After Ireland, they landed in France on 26 February 1917. The battalion was reduced to a Cadre on 7 May 1918 and disbanded 3 August 1918. He was discharged from the Army on 27th January 1919 with tuburculosis. He died on 5th March 1921 his death was registered in the Mansfield Registration District and he is buried in Farnsfield (St. Michael) Churchyard Nottinghamshire.
