He was the son of George and Emma Wheatley and the brother of William Henry and Doris Wheatley. They lived at Wheatley Grange Cottages North Wheatley Retford Nottinghamshire. By 1911 William Henry had left home and was working on a farm at Haworth Nottinghamshire.
Herbert Sewell served with the battalion on Gallipoli and in Egypt. They arrived in France on 1 July 1916 and spent a month on the Arras front before moving to the Somme. They attacked from Constance Trench at 12.35pm on the 26 September 1916 and in ten minutes took the first objective. They then took Zollern trench, the second objective and rested here for an hour before attacking and taking Hessian Trench. Unfortunately other units did not get up and therefore only the 9th battalion's section of Hessian was taken. They would 'share' the trench with the enemy who were either side of them. It was not until 3pm on 27th that all of Hessian was taken. At some point in the day, Herbert was killed and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. John Morse
