Henry George Colman was born in 1887 at Gunthorpe, Norfolk and was the son of Daniel a farm labourer and Catherine Walkey Colman née Ledner, of Spalding lane, Melton Constable, Norfolk His father Daniel was born in 1867 at Briingham, Norfolk and his mother Catherine Walkey Ledner was born in 1860 at Morton, Norfolk, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Walsingham registration district, they went on to have the following children, Lillian Blanche b1887 Walsingham, Henry George b1887 Walsingham, Rose Ellen b1889 Walsingham, Albert Richard b1892 Gunthorpe, John William b1893 Gunthorpe, Thomas Charles b1894 Gunthorpe, Agnes Norah b1897 Gunthorpe, Robert Nicholas b1897 Gunthorpe, Horace Reginald b1900 Gunthorpe and Celia Gladys b1902 Gunthorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at Spalding Lane, Melton Constable, Norfolk and are shown as Daniel Colman 41 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Catherine 48 yrs and their children, Henry George 23 yrs a waggoner, Albert Richard 19 yrs a farm labourer, John William 17 yrs a farm labourer, Thomas Charles 16 yrs a yard man, Robert Nicholas 13 yrs an odd job lad on farm, Horace Reginald 11 yrs a scholar and Celia Gladys 8 yrs a scholar.
Private Henry George Colman enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Farnsfield, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters and died of wounds on 31st October 1916, he is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, grave reference O.I.O. 8
His brother Robert Nicholas Colman also served during the 'Great War' he served with the Norfolk Regiment and was killed in action on 30th November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial.
