Family History

Walter was born at Navenby in 1889 the son of John Henry and Elizabeth Grantham (nee Pell) his father was the local police officer, he had two younger brothers Ernest born 1891 and Frederick John born 1899. He married Kate Ford who had been born in Lincoln in 1888 in 1911 in Gainsborough. They had a son Norman Henry born 1911 His parents John Henry and Elizabeth Grantham later lived at The Terrace, Claxby, Lincoln. His wife later remarried and became Kate Blanchard (formerly Grantham), of Station Rd., Wickenby, Lincoln

Military History

Lance Corporal Walter Henry Grantham enlisted into the Army in Misterton and later died in France on 8th August 1916 and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial,Somme.

Pte W H Grantham The Retford Times 25/8/1916 From several sources at the front news has come through of the death of Pte W H Grantham, Lincoln's, who was formerly on the Station staff. He was badly wounded in the trenches and was being conveyed to the dressing station, when unfortunately on the way a shell dropped amongst the party and Grantham was killed.
