Family History

Ernest was the eldest son of Charles and Ellen Ward. Charles was born in Caenby, Lincolnshire, and Ellen in Bracebridge, Lincolnshire. They had three children; Ernest b. South Leverton, and Kathleen and Charles William who were both born in Nettleham, Lincolnshire. In 1901 Charles (33), a general farm labourer, and Ellen (22) were living at Field House Farm, Lincoln Road, Nettleham, Lincolnshire, with their two children Ernest (2) and Kathleen (1). Also in the household was a boarder, John Pocklington (23), a quarryman. By 1911 the family was living at Hayton Castle, Retford. Charles (43) was still working as a farm labourer. He and Ellen now had three children, Ernest (12), Kathleen (11) and Charles William (5). Also in the household were three farm workers, John Thompson (26) a wagoner, Charles Vincent Hill (17) a horseman, and George Moakes a cowman, all of whom were probably boarders. The Royal Navy notified Ernest's mother of his death in 1917; she was then living in Headon near Retford. The later CWGC record gives his parents' address as Little Gringley Grange, Clarborough, Retford, Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Ernest joined the Royal Navy on 25th September 1917 (engagement: 'Hostilities') and was still under training (HMS Victory II) when he died in the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar, Gosport, of septicaemia on 23rd November 1917.
