Thomas was born in 1881 at Attercliffe in Sheffield and was the son of Henry a coal miner and Rebeca Walker (nee Pullison). In 1905 he married his wife Ella May Robinson at Gainsborough, they had two children Rebeca May born 1908 and Arthur born 1880. In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Sailors Alley, Bridge Street, Gainsborough Thomas is 30 years of age and is a labourer machine fitter.
Thomas enlisted at Retford and served with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment )with the service number 22145. He later transferred to the 1st battalion Lancashire Fusiliers with service number 24268 and finally transferred to the 9th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment with service number 30242.His medal index card shows he first saw service in the Balkans theatre of war on 15th August 1915. He was killed in action on 10th April 1918 and is commemorated on Croix-du-Bac British Cemetery Memorial, Steenwerck, France.
