George was born in Gringley in 1888 and was the son of George James, a farmer and pig dealer, and Caroline Milner (nee Needham) of Gringley-on-the-Hill. He had two sisters Margaret and Eliza. On the 1901 census the family was living at The Lock at Gringley; George was 12 years old. By the time of the 1911 census George (22) had moved from the family home and was a boarder at 8 St John's Avenue, Longsight, Manchester, and working as a grocer's assistant. It may have been while he was living in Manchester that he met and married his wife Amy Gray. They were married in 1913 in Chorlton Lancashire. and probably lived in Manchester as this was where George enlisted. Amy remarried (Potter), and lived at 46 Byrom Street, Hulme, Manchester. (CWGC)
George enlisted in Manchester and served as a Gunner in the 200th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died of wounds on 19th October 1918 aged 30. He was buried in St Aubert British Cemetery, Nord, France (grave ref. III. A. 36).
