Herbert Cowdell was born in 1890 in Bingham and was the son of William a farm labourer and and Elizabeth Cowdell née Clark of Fisher Lane, Bingham. His father William was born in 1867 in Westwood, Derbyshire and his mother Elizabeth Clark was born in 1864 in Bingham, they were married in 1890 in Bingham and went on to have 7 children all of whom were born in Bingham, Elizabeth b1893, Florence b1895, Annie b1896, William 1899, Nellie b1902 and Frank Cowdell, b1906. In 1911 census the family were living on Fisher Lane Bingham and were shown as William 44 yrs he is living with his wife 47 yrs and their children , Herbert 20 yrs a farm labourer, Annie 15 yrs a domestic servant, William 12 yrs a scholar, Nellie 9 yrs a scholar, Frank 5 yrs , also living with them is Ellen Cowdell 65 yrs a sister

Military History

Private Herbert Cowdell enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with he service number 4818 in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in the Balkans theatre of war on 1st October 1915. He was killed in action on 23rd April 1917, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 6
