John Thorpe and Maria Elizabeth Jackson married in 1881 at Ecclesall. John worked with horses all his working life and in 1911 was a stud groom. They spent most of their married life living at Bury in Huntingdonshire having nine children born there from 1882 until C 1900. They moved to Elkesley where they had their last child. One of the children was named Ernest Jackson Thorpe, taking the middle name Jackson after his mother.
Ernest was attested at Retford and enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters for the duration of the war on 30th Septem-ber 1916. His dilapidated war record, records that he left Folkston and landed in Boulogne on the 3rd May 1917 and was later granted a weeks’ leave from 3/8/17 which he spent at his parents at Bunkers Hill, Elkesley, Retford. He is reported as having died of wounds sustained and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France
