William was born at Newton on Trent in 1896 the son of William a boot and shoe maker and Elizabeth Alice Talbot. The family lived at Bridge House, Newton on Trent. William was part of a large family and had 5 brothers and 3 sisters. In the 1901 census the family are living at the Gate House Trent Bridge Road, Newton on Trent. His family eventually moved to Coronation Terrace,Dunham on Trent.
William enlisted in Picadilly,London and served with the 2/11th battalion London Regiment before being transferred to the 22nd battalion London Regiment (The Queens) He was wounded and died of his wounds on 17th April 1918 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery,France
His younger brother Jim also served with the Yorks and Lancashire Regiment during the Great War and was killed on 13th April 1917 CWGC - Son of William and Elizabeth Alice Talbot, of Dunham-on-Trent, Notts.
