Family History

John Bacon was born and bred in Dunham on Trent. He married there in 1874 to Elizabeth Clay and spent most of his life working as an agricultural labourer and for a short time, his wife, Elizabeth worked as a dairy milker. All his children were also born in Dunham. They had nine children, seven girls and two boys who were born between 1876 and 1896. Their mother, Elizabeth, died in 1909 at the age of 44. The two boys were George Edward Bacon born in 1883 and John Henry Bacon born 1877. John Henry married to Rose Talbot in 1912, whereas George Edward married in 1906 to Lillie Stacey at Gainsborough, where George worked as a labourer in boiler shop. The couple had four children, John William born 1907, Lillian 1908, Alice 1910 and Florrie in 1911 and were residing at 13 Penny’s Yard, Gainsborough.

Military History

George joined up from Gainsborough. He went to France where he was killed in action. As he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France
