Family History

Jim was born in 1898 the son of William a boot and shoe maker and Elizabeth Alice Talbot. The family lived at Bridge House, Newton on Trent. Jim had 5 brothers and 3 sisters. In 1911 the family was living at the Gate House Trent Bridge Road, Newton on Trent. They later moved to Coronation Terrace, Dunham on Trent.

Military History

Jim attested on 12th December 1915 at Pontefract. He was put in the Army Reserve until 29th October 1916 and mobilised on the 30th October. He trained at various camps from 30th October 1916 until 27th January 1917 when he went to France on 28th January 1917. On the 13th April 1917 he suffered a shell wound which fractured his left tibia and his leg was eventually amputated. He died as a result of these wounds. He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery Belgium Grave Reference: XII A 3 Pte Jim Talbot Retford Times 4 May 1917 The sad news reached Mr and Mrs Talbot, Toll Bridge House, Newton on Trent, last Saturday week, that their son, Jim had been seriously wounded and a day or two later official information was received that he had died in hospital in France, The distressing news came as a great shock to the whole village and neighbourhood as the deceased was well known and was a great favourite amongst a wide circle of friends. He joined the York and Lancs Regiment six months ago and had only been at the front a few weeks. Mr and Mrs Talbot and family have the deepest sympathy of everybody in the district. A memorial service was held at the Parish Church on Sunday evening last.

Extra Information

His elder brother William also served with the 22nd Bn London Regiment and was killed in 1918.
