He was born in Sheffield around 1880 and his mother was Margaret Clare, born in Staverly, who was widowed early and earned he living as a dressmaker. Edward spent some time in a school in Dinedor, Hereford, living in when around 10 years old, and by 1901 he was resident in Hull living with his mother, working as a clerk. In 1910 he married Maria McDonnell in Hull. A year later they were living in Carlton in Lindrick, where his wife was the local Post Mistress and Edward was a chartered accountant. They had married on the 4th August 1910 and had their first child, Edward in 1912 and a second, Mary M M, in 1915. After the war, a pension was granted to his wife and two children of 22/11d a week as of April 1918.
Number 203173, Private Edward Joseph Clare had been attested on 9th December 1915 and put on the special reserve list. He was mobilised on the 11 November 1916 and posted to France on the 26th February 1917 with the 2/5th battalion of the Sherwood Foresters regiment. Seven months later, on the 26th September 1917, whilst fighting in the Flanders region, he was killed in action..
