George Clarke was born in 1886 in Bole the son of Samuel a farm foreman and Elizabeth Clarke nee Norman of East Stockwith, Nottinghamshire His father Samuel was born at Leverton, Nottinghamshire in 1843 and his mother Elizabeth Norman was born in 1855 in Lound, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford Registration District , they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy their surviving children were, Charles b1881, North Wheatley, Emma b1885 North Wheatley, George b1887 South Wheatley, William b1890 East Stockwith Harriett b1891 Hayton, and Sarah b1892 Tiln. in the 1911 census his parents are living at East Stockwith and are shown as Samuel 68 yrs a farm foreman, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 56 yrs and their son William 21 yrs a farm servant.

Military History

George enlisted in Scunthorpe and served with the 7th battalion, Linconshire Regiment until he died of wounds on 20th April 1918. He is buried in Hedauville Communal Cemetery Extension, France
