James Thomas Fenton and Minnie Fenton had 4 sons and 4 daughters all born in Blyth, Nottinghamshre. The eldest of the Fenton’s sons was Harry who was born 17/3/1891. At age 20 he was working as a drapers assistant.
He initially enlisted as number 25366 in the Leicestershire Regiment, at Leicester and then moved or transferred to Machine Gun Corps 181st Coy. He was killed in action on 15th July 1916 and is buried in Louez Military cemetery Duisans, Pas de Calais grave reference I E 9. Worksop Guardian 28 July1 916. Blyth has this week to lament the loss of two Gallant soldiers, Lance, Corp., H Fenton, son of Mr. and Mrs. J Fenton, and Pte. Arthur Bell, son of Mrs. Bell, Mill Lane. Both men were well known in the village and highly respected. Fenton was attached to the Machine Gun Section, and his officer, Sec. Liet- Gordon S Moorehouse , writing to his mother says:- “Dear Mrs Fenton,- I am extremely sorry to inform you that your son, No. 30522, Lance, Corpl, H Fenton, died of wounds received in action in the 15th inst. “He was engaged along with another man in filling some ammunition belts when a high explosive shell burst and hit him in several places. I attended to him personally until such time as we could get him to a doctor, and I have never met a braver of more cheerful man under the circumstances. Unfortunately, he was unable to stand the shock, and died a few hours after being hit. To me personally, his loss is very keen, and to the whole of the section, as your son was most popular and always willing to do any work allotted to him, I desire therefore, both on their behalf and my own, to tender our heartfelt sympathy to you in your terrible sudden bereavement. I will ascertain where he was buried and advice you later: _ Yours very truly,”
