Family History

Sidney was born at Thurnscoe near Rotherham in 1895 and was baptised on 2nd June 1895, he was the son of William a coal miner and Sarah Ann Morton, he was from a large family and had 8 siblings. In the 1911 census he is living with his family at 3 Pear Tree Cottage, Thurncoe at this time he is 15 years of age, single and working as a pit bank hand.

Military History

He enlisted into the army at Wath upon Dearne and served with the 8th battalion, Yorks and Lancaster Regiment .He was killed in action on the 1st July 1916, the first day of the battle of the Somme along with thousands of others on that fateful day.

He is buried in Blighty Valley cemetery, Authuille Wood, France
