Richard Jeffreys Nicolls was born in 1894 at Knipton, Leicestershire and was the youngest son of the Reverend Edward Richard Jefferys and Beatrice Florence Josephine Nicolls née Barrow, of Bottesford Rectory, Nottingham.His father Edward was born in 1854 at Plumstead, Kent and his mother Beatrice Florence Josephine Barrow was born in 1859 at Barnham, Somerset, they were married on 17th January 1882 at St Pauls Church, Clifton, Gloucestershire, they went on to have 6 children, Dorothy Beatrice Jeffreys, b1883 Somerby, Lincs, Murial Emma b1884 Somerby, Lincs, Kathleen Mary b1886 Knipton, Leicestershire, Arthur Edward Jeffreys b1888 Knipton, Leicestershire, Eleanor Katherine b1889Knipton, Leicestershire and Richard Jeffreys b1895 Knipton, Leicestershire In the 1911 census Richard is shown as being 16 yrs of age , single and a boarder at 4 The College, Great Malvern.In the same 1911 census his parents are living at The Rectory at Trowell, Nottingham and are shown as Edward 57 yrs a rector, he is living with his wife Florence 52 yrs and their daughter Kathleen Mary 25 yrs, also living at the address are two female servants. His probate was proven on 14th December 1916 at London and shows him as Richard Jeffreys Nicholls of Trowell Rectory, Nottingham, Captain 9/11th battalion Sherwood Foresters , died on 1st October 1916 in France on active service, his effects of £150, 9shillings and 3 pence were left to his father The Reverend Edward Richard Jeffrey Nicolls a clerk.

Military History

Captain Richard Jeffreys Nicolls was commissioned in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment in September 1914. He served in Gallipoli from July 1915, he was severely wounded in action after landing at Sulva Bay. He was killed in action on 1st October 1916 and is buried at Peake Wood Cemetery, Somme, France.

Extra Information

Further commemorated on the Malvern School war memorial. His brother Arthur Jeffreys Nicholls also served during the Great War, initially a Private in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, he was commissioned in the Kings Africa Rifles, where he served as a Captain, he survived the war.
