Family History

John Arthur Folwer was born in 1883 at Trowell and was the son of the late John a forge blacksmith and Mary Fowler née Baker of Trowell Forge, Trowell, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1842 in Nottingham and his mother Mary was born in Ironville , Derbyshire in 1850 they were married on 30th July 1870 at Ironville and went on to have the following chidren, Thomas b1875, John Arthur b1883, William Henry b1885, Fanny b1887 and Sarah b1890 all were born at Trowell His father John died in 1901 he was 59 yrs of age , it was recorded in the Basford Registration District . In the 1911 census the family are living at Trowell Forge, Trowell and are shown as Mary Fowler 61 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, John Arthur 28 yrs an iron foundry worker, Sarah Helen 21 yrs a shop assistant in the boot trade, also at the address is John Christian 25 yrs a railway signalman he is a boarder.

Military History

Lance Corporal John Arthur Fowler, served with the 17th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he was killed in action during a trench raid during the night of 31st July/1st August 1916. He is buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery.
