Family History

Arthur Shepherd (junior) was born in 1888 the son of Arthur Shepherd (senior) a furnace labourer and his first wife the late Charlotte Shepherd née Peperday. Arthur Shepherd (senior) was born in 1861 at Stapleford, Charlotte Peperday was born in 1865 at Loughborough she died in 1899 aged 34 yrs. married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district they had children Arthur b1888, Ada b1890 and Emma b1892 His father later remarried in 1900 at Nottingham to Gertrude Webster In 1901 the family lived at 150 Nottingham Road Ilkeston.

Military History

Private Arthur Shepherd enlisted on 10th August 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 26 yrs and 136 days, living at 18 Church Street, Stapleford. He landed in France on 27th December 1914 and was killed in action, 12th March 1915 during the counter attack by the Germans at Neuve Chapelle, France. Commemorated : Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 26 and 27.
