Samuel Merriman was born in 1894 he was the son of William a farm labourer and Agnes Merriman née Bacon of Toton Lane , Stapleford . William was born in 1859 in Stanford on Soar, Agnes Bacon was born in 1859 in Loughborough, married in 1881 in Barrow Upon Soar, they went on to have 10 children who were : John Lewis b1883 Thurston, Benjamin b1886 Thurston, William b1888 Loughborough , Edward b1888 Loughborough, Horace b1899 Stanford, Ada b1893 Loughborough, Samuel b1894 Stanford, Joseph b1897 Stanford, Horace b1899 Stanford, and Maurice b1901 Stapleford. In 1911 the family lived on Toton Lane Stapleford Nottinghamshire and were shown as William a farm labourer , he is living with his wife Agnes 52 yrs and their children Ada a cotton winder, Samuel an engine stoker, Joseph a farm labourer and Maurice a scholar. The family later lived at 'The Ash' Town Street Sandiacre Derbyshire.
Lance Corporal Samuel Merriman, enlisted in Nottingham , he initially served with service number 30687 in the Army Service Corps later transferring to the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He later served with 10th Battalion and 17th (Welbeck Rangers) with which he was killed in action on the Somme on 3rd September 1916. He is buried in Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart.
Three of his brothers also served during the 'Great War' His photograph, together with those of his three brothers, the sons of William and Agnes Merriman, of "The Ash," Town Street, Sandiacre, Nottinghamshire, were published in the local press the Nottingham Evening Post on 2nd February 1915. They were: Pte. John Edward Merriman enlisted on 28th August 1914, posted to 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 18th August 1915 and was discharged on 13th July 1916 due to wounds. Pte. Horace Merriman enlisted on 9th September 1914 , landing in France with 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, on 28th July 1915. Later transferred to 12th (Pioneer) Battalion, he was discharged due to sickness on 14th March 1918. Cpl. Edward Merriman, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was taken prisoner 20th October 1914.
