Joseph Shardlow Mellows was born in 1890 the son of the late William a baker and grocer and Hannah Mary Mellows née Hewitt of 124 Nottingham Road, Stapleford. William Mellows was born in 1852 at Stapleford, Hannah Mary Hewitt was born in 1861 at Beeston, married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had a further child, Sarah Sisson Mellows b1898 at Stapleford. In 1911 the family lived at Clouds Cottage, Stapleford, widow Hannah Mary is living with her children, Joseph Shardlow an out of work architect and Sarah Sissons a scholar. On 27th November 1918 Joseph's probate was proved at Nottingham, it showed him as Joseph Shardlow Mellows a sapper in H.M. Army died on 12th August 1918 in France, his effects of £692, 7 shillings and 1 pence were left to Hannah Mary Mellows.
