The battalion entered the line in the Bouchevesnes sector (Somme) on 26 January 1917, and the major concern was the extreme cold and snow. The war diary mentions that there were some casualties on the 28 and 30 January. William was wounded in action and taken to the Casualty Clearing Station at Bray. He died of his wounds and was buried in the attached cemetery - Bray Military Cemetery, grave I.C.14. He was the only 1st Battalion man to die that day. John Morse
