Thomas was born in 1894, the son of Matthew William a coal miner hewer and Leacher Davis née Martin of Stanley Brickyard. Matthew was born in 1863 at Normanton, Derbyshire, Leacher Martin was born in 1872 at Stanley, married on 3rd April 1892 at Duffield, Derbyshire, they had the following children, Matthew b1892, Thomas b1894, Arnold b1899, Isabel b1900 Joseph b1903 and Ada b1909 all were born in Stanley. In 1911 the family lived at Stanley Brickyard, Mathew is a coal miner hewer, Thomas a colliery labourer and Arnold a scholar.
Private Thomas Davis attested on 10th December 1915 at Ilkeston, giving his age as 21 yrs and 8 months, he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 25th June 1918 on 22nd July 1918 posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of disease on 23rd October 1910 at The City Hospital, Walker Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne. He is buried: Stanley (St. Andrew) Churchyard, Derbyshire, United Kingdom. (ASR)
Thomas is also commemorated on the Mapperley Colliery war memorial at St Wilfreds Church, West Hallam. (see photo) His brother Arnold Davis enlisted at Derby and served with the service number 49144 in the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action on 11th September 1918 and is commemorated on the Vis-En- Artois Memorial France.
